Technology is constantly changing and everyday tasks are more technology-driven than ever before. Almost everything we do now requires the use of some type of technology, and this trend will continue. Keeping up with these constant changes in technology can be challenging but is essential to function in today’s world.

In addition, as some people get older or confront changes in skills and abilities, they may require a little assistance to successfully complete everyday tasks, especially those that are technology-driven. For example, this might include re-ordering prescriptions where the process often no longer involves going to the pharmacy and handing the pharmacist a paper script but taking care of the transaction online/via the phone — or using an ATM to perform banking transactions or a kiosk to purchase a metro or bus ticket.

For Clinicians

Whether your client has schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder or is experiencing age-related declines, they commonly experience declines in everyday functioning. These declines are even more dramatic in today’s technology-driven world. One of the main drivers of these declines is cognitive impairment. Improving cognition is challenging, and even successful cognitive remediation therapy does not typically deliver functional gains.

Skills training interventions have been used for years to improve everyday functioning, but challenges in insurance reimbursement have made many of these clinical programs inaccessible to the people who need them most. Cognitive remediation is appealing because of its low cost and it is easy to deliver, but research has demonstrated that cognitive remediation is typically not enough to improve everyday functioning.

i-Function is here to meet this challenge. Developed by two scientists whose expertise is in cognitive enhancement and skills training with diverse populations, this technology-based assessment and skills training program targets critical everyday skills that are challenging to clients with compromised cognition. Money and medication management, wayfinding and other critical daily skills are assessed and then trained efficiently and directly using empirically proven techniques. The training is targeted to the specific needs of the individual.

Based on an easily accessible, flexible and affordable technology platform, all assessment and training protocols are designed to be realistic and engaging. They can also be administered with minimal supervision or clinician instructions. Our protocols are also available in English and Spanish. Performance is tracked, and you can easily access your client progress, send reminders to clients and change suggested training exercises as needed. Or, you can let i-Function do the training with minimal intervention and supervision. i-Function can also manage the data, and all data is secure.

For Researchers

Assessing or training individuals with cognitive impairments such as those with schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease or other neuropsychiatric conditions such as major depression, or evaluating the impact of an intervention now requires a performance-based cognitive assessment and a functional co-primary measure. Co-primary measures of functional performance can be performance-based or interview-based, and there are several paper and pencil assessments that can be employed for these studies.

Current paper and pencil functional capacity assessments often involve the use of props, which can be cumbersome. Some assessment protocols are currently outdated (calling 411, writing checks), and/or require the participant to pretend to be engaged in an activity. Given the challenges of people with cognitive impairments, it is hard to make sure that participation in these simulations is in line with the requirements of the task.

i-Function can help meet these challenges. i-Function has a battery of everyday tasks performed on a technology platform that are ecologically valid and capture the demands and complexities of current everyday tasks. For example, the battery includes an actual example of an existing ATM, a ticket kiosk and an interactive telephone menu system for prescription refill. The person does not need to pretend to engage in everyday tasks; they actually perform them using a touch screen. Our battery of tasks reflect tasks essential to everyday independence and are not in many cases simulations; they are quantifications of everyday demands on a naturally occurring technology platform.

Performance on i-Function’s everyday functioning battery is correlated with both neuropsychological test performance and with paper and pencil functional capacity measures, for people with schizophrenia, and people in the AD spectrum. Previous studies with this battery found high rates of completion and low rates of administrator errors, yielding high rates of valid data. The use of the battery does not require technology skills, and it is available in both English and Spanish.

These measures are being used in multiple studies both nationally and internationally that involve different treatments with diverse populations. This highly flexible platform can be customized to an individual researcher’s requirements, and data transmission and storage can be flexibly developed.
